Our Role

Brookbanks has been appointed as Project Managers, Employer’s Agent, and Quantity Surveyors for the delivery of Section 278 (S278) highway works at the Vearse Farm development in Bridport — a masterplan covering 45.4 hectares, delivering residential areas, employment space, educational facilities and a care home.

A key component of Brookbanks’ involvement has been the design and implementation of a new roundabout junction at Miles Cross, improving access from the A35 dual carriageway to the development via the B3162 West Road.

Brookbanks’ Civil Engineering team worked in close collaboration with National Highways (NH) and Dorset County Council (DCC) to secure Technical Approval (TA) for the roundabout design — including a National Highways Departure — within just three submissions. This achievement reflects the team’s commitment to quality, coordination, and responsiveness.

Our technical support for the S278 works included:

  • Site clearance
  • Drainage and earthworks design
  • Utilities review and coordination
  • Pavement design
  • Road markings and signage
  • Vehicle restraint systems (VRS)
  • Highway lighting design

The Outcome

Construction works commenced in Autumn 2024, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of the Vearse Farm development. The scheme is particularly challenging due to its location on one of the busiest roads in Devon, adjacent to the small town of Bridport.

Thanks to our proactive project management and technical expertise, a Section 278 Agreement is now in place, and works are underway to deliver a safer, more efficient junction that will support the long-term success of the development.

The total value of the S278 works is £3 million, and we continues to oversee implementation to ensure quality, compliance, and timely delivery.
