From the outset of this project, ambitious objectives were set for the school’s sustainable design credentials.

Our Role

We were appointed to undertake full thermal modelling of the performance of the building, looking at energy flows and internal temperatures with zero heating energy input.

The Outcome

Our subsequent designs utilised the thermal mass of the proposed heavyweight masonry exterior to control winter heat loss and summertime over heating. Fully automatic ventilation would operate at night to cool the classrooms, whilst ventilation air drawn through a ground floor void would reduce energy demands.

High frequency lighting and controlled IT loads limit electricity consumption, and a large proportion of the school’s electricity would be generated from four 6Kw vertical axis wind turbines.

Domestic hot water heating was solar assisted, and sitewide sustainable drainage and rainwater harvesting systems were incorporated.

A comprehensive energy management system ensured that the energy features of the school were a constant learning resource.

Due to a funding cut, this project was not constructed.
