Housed within the Grade I listed Christchurch Mansion, the Wolsey Art Gallery is the home of the largest collection of paintings by John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough outside of London, as well as a wide range of period furniture, porcelain, costumes and sculptures. This Tudor building dates back to 1584 making its very fabric and the collections it houses extremely susceptible to environmental fluctuations.

Our Role

We were appointed to refurbish all the mechanical and electrical services supplying the gallery, working in close collaboration with specialist conservation architect, Hilary Brightman.

The Outcome

Our designs struck the careful balance required to maintain critical environmental conditions whilst observing the sensitivities of an historic listed building. Sophisticated air-conditioning systems were discreetly incorporated into the newly panelled ceiling; this enabled a controlled air environment that maintains both temperature and relative humidity, whilst the air filtering system removes particulates and any damaging gases. Audio systems and conservation lighting were also installed at this time, creating an attractive public gallery display for the museum’s collections.
