Sunnyside Church approached SVM in relation to assisting and advising the PCC on issues with their existing failing gas boiler system and in particular looking to reduce running costs and CO2 emissions to net zero by 2030 in line with General Synod requirements.

Our Role

As part of this review SVM undertook a detailed survey on site to assess the existing equipment and offer any quick solutions to facilitate keeping the existing boilers running for a period of time. The survey also reviewed the fabric of the existing historic Church and newer Church Hall buildings to assist in understanding heat losses in each of the spaces and opportunities to improve the existing building fabric.

The Outcome

Once the brief was refined we generated a detailed thermal model of the buildings to replicate energy use under a series of proposed fabric improvements. We then undertook a feasibility study to investigate most suitable means of heating the buildings with solutions recommended that were bespoke to each space and in particular how/when each space was used through the year.

The report included an analysis of carbon usage and proposed extent of roof mounted Photovoltaic panels, potentially with battery storage for maximum on-site energy use, that could meet the General Synod requirement for net zero carbon emissions. A phased sequence was proposed such that this could be funded in separate projects and ultimately up to the 2030 deadline.
