The Church of England General Synod has indicated that it would like the portfolio of church properties to be carbon zero by 2030. All Saints Church in Wing, Buckinghamshire is thought to be one of the oldest churches in England and commissioned a study to review their own heating systems. This report included a review of energy reduction measures alongside renewable heating solutions.

Our Role

As part of the renewable heating review, SVM carried out a site survey to calculate thermal demand and propose options for low carbon replacement plant. Of key importance was the underground plant room with a single gas boiler which suffers from localised flooding after prolonged periods of rain.

The Outcome

Due to the Grade 1 listed status of the building, the limited available fabric improvements were proposed. For the heating plant, options ranged from specialist air source heat pumps designed to operate with higher flow temperatures to innovative radiant heater solutions that pinpoint thermal energy to occupied areas of the church.

All solutions were able to meet the General Synod requirements of net zero carbon. The report detailed the annual saving each option would provide when the church switches over from gas to a renewable electrical solution based on typical electricity and gas tariff.
