Following a £4.2m Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the Jewish Museum embarked upon a four-year long programme of redevelopment. The newly expanded museum involved the adaptation of a building adjacent to the original Grade I listed property, and the extension of services systems into the new building.

Our Role

We were appointed to undertake full mechanical, electrical, public health and lift services designs, including site supervision duties. The site was subject to restrictions on local power availability, which we overcame by enabling the entry of multiple electrical supplies into the building, avoiding the cost and space required to include an on site substation.

The Outcome

Our designs incorporated several energy-efficient features such as LED lighting, automatic lighting controls, intelligent BMS and part passive ventilation, as well as an innovative system of re-using conditioned air through three separate spaces. In response to the client’s brief we met the high-level security requirements with bomb resistant facilities, overt and covert monitoring networks, and rare lock-down systems.

The completed museum includes permanent and temporary galleries, BS5454 archive storage, a multi purpose theatre, café and education areas.
