The Holy Sepulchre is widely documented to contain the two holiest sites in Christianity and is, accordingly granted UNESCO World Heritage status. The interior of the church’s iconic rotunda dome is decorated with twelve golden adornments; a sun burst surrounding a central window that lets in natural light.

Our Role

While the sun is shining, a shaft of sunlight is thrown onto the floor beneath the Rotunda and directly on the Edicule (believed to be the tomb of Christ) during certain times of the day.

We were appointed a number of years ago to design a decorative lighting solution for the interior of the dome. At the time, this was a ground-breaking design using ‘fractured’ fibre optic ‘fingers’ installed above the twelve radii of the sun burst, allowing the light source illuminating each of them to be located in an accessible ceiling void above the dome.

The Outcome

This provided a simple means of changing failed lamps, as well as providing a zero-maintenance system within the dome, thereby alleviating the need for high level access in the important areas of worship below.
