Millwright’s Place, Bristol
Delivering Efficient Structural Design for a Major Residential Development: Millwright's Place is a major residential development in Bristol delivered by Willmott Dixon. As part of the project, we provided structural engineering expertise, taking full responsibility for the redesign of the reinforced concrete frame and supporting the scheme from tender stage through to completion. Our structural engineering specialists worked closely with the wider project team to develop a practical and efficient structural solution that supported buildability, project delivery and cost efficiency. Through detailed analysis and a collaborative approach, we helped ensure the final design met the technical requirements of the development while supporting wider construction and commercial objectives.
Our Role
Optimising the Structural Solution
A key aspect of our involvement was the redesign of the reinforced concrete frame to improve efficiency across the structure.
Through a detailed analysis of the original design, our structural engineering specialists assessed slab arrangements, column locations and overall structural performance. This review identified opportunities to optimise the positioning of columns throughout the building, enabling the introduction of a thinner slab profile without compromising structural integrity.
The final design reduced material requirements, improved structural efficiency and supported an accelerated construction programme.
Alongside the frame redesign, we developed an efficient reinforcement strategy based on detailed geometry and careful coordination of levels throughout the site. Considering these elements together ensured the structure worked effectively as a complete system and provided a coordinated solution that could be efficiently delivered on site.
In addition to revising the proposed frame design, our role oversaw the utilisation of the existing foundations.
A significant element of the project involved retaining and integrating existing foundations into the revised design. By incorporating these foundations within the final structural solution, we were able to avoid unnecessary excavation works while maintaining alignment with the wider development proposals.
This approach supported efficient delivery and demonstrated the value that detailed engineering analysis can bring when assessing opportunities within an existing design.
Throughout the project, our specialists worked closely with Willmott Dixon, the frame contractor and other stakeholders to ensure the structural solution was fully coordinated with neighbouring developments and site requirements. This collaborative approach supported effective decision-making and contributed to a smooth construction process from design through to delivery.
The Outcome
Supporting Successful Project Delivery
Millwright’s Place demonstrates the important role structural engineering plays in creating efficient, buildable and commercially considered development solutions.
Through detailed technical analysis, strategic column realignment, efficient reinforcement detailing and the successful integration of existing foundations, we delivered a coordinated structural design tailored to the needs of both the specific project and the client more widely.
The development highlights how informed engineering decisions, delivered through collaboration and technical expertise, can create value throughout the development process while supporting efficient construction and successful project outcomes.
