A new academy on the site of the former Willfield Secondary School, the project required extensive reclamation works as a result of the former coal mining legacy beneath the site.

Our Role

With a capital cost of £20 million, Discovery Academy was one of 18 school buildings in Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s £270 million Building Schools for the Future programme. We completed civil, structural and highway design works for this flagship project, as well as:

  • Civil engineering
  • Structural engineering
  • Contract administration
  • Principal Designer
  • Visiting Engineer

The Outcome

  • The two-storey building includes flexible teaching spaces and indoor and outdoor sports facilities, including a multi-use games area and an astroturf pitch, which is available for use by local clubs and the wider community 
  • Extensive music facilities were also provided including a performance hall, three drama/music studios, six music practice rooms, a recording studio, control room and music storerooms
